Education

Margaret Williams has been involved in educational projects since she started her company MJW PRODUCTIONS in the 1980’s.

She has lectured at colleges, given workshops and masterclasses, particularly in the area of dance on screen and music films for television.

2021

Margaret spent the Winter semester teaching Dance for Camera to MFA Dance Students in the department of World Arts and Cultures, University of California, Los Angeles. Due to the pandemic, the course was taught virtually. Margaret was in London and the students were in a variety of locations and time zones in the US. Despite the many challenges raised by enforced isolation, the students were extremely focused and they produced brilliant films.

2020

Margaret spent the Winter semester teaching Dance for Camera to MFA Dance Students in the department of World Arts and Cultures, University of California, Los Angeles.

Francesca Penzani, who teaches the Dance for Camera Course at CALARTS invited Margaret to present films made in collaboration with Victoria Marks: Outside In with Candoco; Mothers & Daughters and Veterans. The students were incredibly warm and receptive, it was a wonderful afternoon.

2019

INWARD EYE Writer’s Workshop
In development for her feature film, Margaret attended the inspiring Writer’s Workshop given by Vicki Jung at William Wordsworth’s House in the Lake District – part of the Inward Eye Film Festival

A 3 day Dance Video Symposium presented by Mitchell Rose and Margaret
UCLA January 9-11

Margaret taught two courses LOOKING for the UNSEEN and MAKING DANCE FILMS at UCLA University of California, Los Angeles, January until March.

2018

In addition to teaching Video Dance to MFA Dance Students, Margaret designed LOOKING for the UNSEEN, an interdisciplinary course for architecture, climate science, dance, choreography, film, photography, art and design students at UCLA University of California.

2017

Margaret spent the Winter semester teaching Video Dance to MFA Dance Students in the department of World Arts and Cultures, University of California, Los Angeles.

2016

During a Robert Rauschenberg Residency, alongside eleven other artists & poets, Margaret & Victoria Marks made the film CAPTIVA working with dancer Wilfried Souly and local resident Emory Cavin on Captiva Island, Florida.

2015

Margaret was part of the mentorship scheme working with five full-time postgraduate dance students at Bath Spa University, Bath.

2009

FELLOWSHIP Margaret granted a Fellowship by SEDANCE with funding from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. Margaret continues exploring movement of the human body and its interaction with the movie camera.

2008

DANCE4FILM introduced by Jonzi D. Margaret curated dance films from around the world and directed the 76 minute Special, DANCE4FILM. An international co-production between Channel 4 Television, Arts Council England, ABC Television Australia and OzCo.

2005

DANCE4FILM introduced by Jonzi D. Margaret curated dance films from around the world and directed the 90′ Special, DANCE4FILM for Channel 4 Television and Arts Council England.

2004

Greece
5 day workshop Dance on Film and Television at the State School of Dance in Athens.

Denmark
6 day workshop Dance on Film and Television at Statens Teater Skole & Zentropa Studios in Copenhagen.

2003

Finland
Week long workshop Dance on Film and Television in Oulu.

4DANCE Curator of dance films from around the world and director of 2 series for Channel 4 Television. In the second series MJW PRODUCTIONS commissioned 11 new films, 2 of which Margaret directed.

2001-2003

Copenhagen
Chair of the selection committee for Nordic Dance Films. 10 short Dance Films were produced with the generic title MOVING NORTH.

Lillehammer
Adviser to the ‘Nordic Dance for Camera Series’ and gave a seminar during the conference.

6 day Masterclass at The Place , for Choreographers – ‘How to make a Dance Film’.

Presenter at Arts Council’s Still Moving Conference – Dance on Film.  The State of the Art.

Norway
A week long workshop on ‘ How to make a Dance Film‘ for the Norwegian Film School and Norwegian Senter for the Art of Danse for professional TV Directors, Choreographers and Composers in Oslo.

A week long workshop on how to make ‘Music and Dance Films and Documentaries’ in Castiglioncello.

Wales
A number of workshops and seminars on ‘How to make a Dance Film’ for BBC Wales in Cardiff for professional TV Directors, Composers and Choreographers.

1996 & 1997

Banff Centre for the Arts, Alberta Canada.
Two Artist Residences with chorographer Victoria Marks. Time was used to research, develop and make the film MEN.

1994 & 1995

Jacob’s Pillow, Massachusetts, USA 2 Artist Residences with choreographer Victoria Marks where the time was used to develop ideas for Dance Films including the film MOTHERS & DAUGHTERS.
