Boy

1995   4′ 30″ Dance Film
ACE / BBC Dance for the Camera Series
Director Peter Anderson and choreographer Rosemary Lee have produced numerous dance films together, BOY being the first of their studies of human figures in the landscape.

The boy stands alone in a dramatic and unforgiving landscape. A powerful and compelling figure with an uncanny ability to conjure and manipulate his solitary universe. He moves with stealth and grace, prowling like a cheetah and then leaping and bounding playfully among the dunes. His extraordinary movement leads the viewer through the vast, empty landscape and into his own inner world.

‘This exquisite gem is about a young boy cavorting with his imagined likeness along the dunes and shores of a pristine beach. Through repetition, slow and arrested motion, and inspired editing, these filmmakers have orchestrated his leaps and falls, slides and runs into the most passionate of dances.’
Dance Magazine, New York

‘ BOY… is delightful in its evocation of a make-believe world of distant horizons charged with beauty, mystery and heroic challenges for a boy on a beach on a summer’s day.’
Robert Penmen, The Dancing Times
